Another Country Premieres at Tribeca Film Festival

A Note From The Director

“The short film is adapted from the poem, My Mother Dreams of Another Country by Natasha Trethewey. The poem is told from Natasha’s perspective as a child in the wound. It almost possess a surreal, child-like quality in its narration of events. In the poem, the setting is Mississippi in 1966 — the year Natasha Trethewey was born. However, with the short film, we took the dramatic liberty of basing the events in 1956. The reason for this change was to place our story in very volatile time in American history for people of color. 1956 was a year after Emmett Till was lynched for allegedly winking at a white woman. Also, the infamous story of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott happened around the same time. Needless to say, America was on fire. Much like it is now in our present time. The need to base our story in 1956 was to ramp up the stakes for our characters, who are engaged in some- thing illegal that can potentially get them killed. This poem taps into motherhood, parenting, and how trauma is passed down through generations.”
