The Root Honors Black Excellence

The prestigious news site The Root honored 100 of the greatest in entertainment, media, politics and sports at its’ annual Root 100 Award event.
Dr. Samuel DuBois Cook once said “have a vision of excellence, a dream of success, and work like hell”. Thus, the nature of this quote is the character of the people that were in attendance and were honored at the event.
Five recipients were directly honored on the night of the occasion at the Apollo Theater, Vice President Kamala Harris; songwriter and songstress Chole Bailey; Questlove, musician, filmmaker and actor; Activist Waikinya Clanton; and honoree Depelsha McGruder founder of “Need a Nudge” campaign.
VP of the United States Kamala Harris sent a video message thanking the Root for the prestigious honor for the culture.
Questlove received an honor for his contributions to the culture and his Oscar award winning film “Summer of Soul”.
Chole Bailey received “The One to Watch Award” as she accepted her award she thanked many women that came before her, including Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Lil Kim and Beyoncé.
